How to Organize a Secret Santa Draw With Exclusions

Decide the rules before drawing names

Agree on a gift budget, exchange date and whether handmade or digital gifts are allowed. Ask people to list a few broad interests or wish ideas. Make participation optional and confirm the final participant list before generating assignments.

1. Confirm everyone wants to take part.
2. Set the same spending limit and gift deadline for everyone.
3. Collect a short wish list if participants want to share one.
4. Choose any pairings that must be excluded before running the draw.

Understand one-way exclusions

An exclusion prevents a particular person from giving to another named person. For example, preventing Alex from drawing Jordan does not automatically prevent Jordan from drawing Alex. If you need both restrictions, add both directions.

Very restrictive rules may make a valid assignment impossible. With three participants, for example, excluding all possible recipients for any one giver means no valid draw exists. Remove a restriction or invite more participants if the generator cannot complete a draw.

Reveal assignments privately

FizzFlow's current tool works as an organizer-led draw in one browser. It can show individual assignments, but it does not send confidential invitation emails. The organizer can see all assignments and should reveal each recipient to only the correct participant.

Keep the organizer's screen out of view, avoid sharing the full list of assignments, and don't enter sensitive personal details. If your event needs automated private invitations, choose a dedicated Secret Santa service with participant accounts or invitation links.

Have a backup plan

Before people buy gifts, make sure every participant has received one recipient. If someone drops out after assignments are sent, the organizer may need to redraw the entire event and tell everyone that earlier assignments are invalid.

Save the final participation roster locally if you expect to use the same group next year; do not confuse a saved participant list with saved gift assignments. The current MVP does not persist the draw after refresh.
