How to Run a Small Knockout Tournament (Including 6-Team Brackets)
A knockout tournament works well when you want a clear winner and limited event time. Each loss eliminates a competitor. Use this guide to choose a format, handle a bracket with an awkward number of entrants and keep the event moving.
Create your bracketChoose knockout or round-robin
In a single-elimination tournament, players or teams leave after their first loss. An eight-team knockout requires seven matches in total. In round-robin play, everyone plays everyone else, which provides more opportunities but takes longer: eight entrants mean 28 matches if each pair meets once.
For a short school, office or friendly event with a final winner, knockout is often the easier format. If fairness means everyone should play several times, round-robin may be the better choice. The current FizzFlow bracket maker supports single elimination only.
How a 6-team bracket works
Knockout brackets are easiest at powers of two: 2, 4, 8, 16 or 32. A six-team bracket uses an eight-slot structure with two byes, so two entrants advance automatically and the other four play in the first round.
The tournament then continues with four remaining teams in the semifinal stage and two in the final. There are five played matches overall, because each match eliminates exactly one of the six competitors.
Run a tournament step by step
Write the team or player names clearly before the draw. Decide whether seeding should be random or based on previous performance. FizzFlow uses random seeding, so it is not appropriate for competitions that require formally ranked entrants.
- Paste 2–32 entrants into the bracket generator.
- Generate the bracket and review any automatic byes.
- Share match assignments with participants, then select each winner to advance.
- Print the bracket or copy the results after the final.
Avoid common bracket mistakes
Set rules for ties, forfeits and disputes before play begins. Use a visible clock if matches have time limits. For an online event, record each result somewhere durable: the present FizzFlow MVP does not save bracket progress across a browser refresh.
If you start from a group activity, use the FizzFlow team generator first and save those team names as a roster. You can then load the roster in the bracket maker, avoiding repeated typing.
